On Thursday, January 9, 2025, Grandview Heights Schools Chief Technology Officer Chris Deis shared the following information with our school community regarding the recent PowerSchool data breach.
Grandview Heights Schools is aware of recent reports regarding a data breach involving PowerSchool, our Student Information System (SIS) provider. At this time, we are actively investigating the situation to assess its potential impact on our district.
This breach has affected school districts across the country and globally, and it includes family and educator information. According to PowerSchool, an unauthorized party used a compromised credential to gain access to the management console of the platform’s PowerSource support tool. From there they were able to access individual school district PowerSchool servers around the world.
PowerSchool has assured us that “the incident is contained,” no malware was involved, and “we do not anticipate the data being shared or made public, and we believe it has been deleted without any further replication or dissemination.” The breach was limited to PowerSchool SIS, meaning no other PowerSchool products were compromised.
We want to reassure you that our district does not store social security numbers or financial information in our SIS, so this sensitive information has not been affected. We understand that this news may raise concerns for you, and we are committed to addressing them transparently.
Our district takes the security and privacy of all data seriously and we are conducting a thorough investigation. We will continue working closely with PowerSchool and other relevant organizations to ensure appropriate actions are taken.
We will share updates as more information becomes available. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate this matter.
Sincerely,
Christopher Deis, Chief Technology Officer
