A major focus of Grandview Heights' Leadership, Facilities, and Teaching and Learning teams has been the investigation of 21st Century learning spaces. During the 2014-2015 school year these teams visited numerous education sites including Hilliard's McVey Innovative Learning Center and Marysville's Early College High School.
A primary focus during these visits was to explore how school spaces are designed (or redesigned) to maximize opportunities for learning and the practice of skills identified as foundational and essential to student success. The 21st Century learning skills of creativity, communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and citizenship are critical to student success both in school and upon graduation whether students are entering college or moving towards a workforce opportunity.
Through a generous grant from the Grandview Heights/Marble Cliff Education Foundation (GHMCEF), three Grandview Heights classrooms are now working prototypes of 21st Century learning spaces. The project built upon the combined work of Grandview Heights teachers Bethany Black, Liz McClellan, Sarah Hoepf, and Susan Falk who described their vision for 21st Century classrooms in separate grant proposals to the GHMCEF.
The distribution of the prototype classrooms is as follows: a third grade classroom at Stevenson Elementary, a fourth grade classroom at Edison Intermediate, and a ninth grade language arts classroom at Grandview Heights High School.
