Science Olympiad News

Grandview Heights Schools will host the Region 6 - Central Region Science Olympiad on Saturday, March 11, 2017, at Grandview Heights High School.

For over 30 years, Science Olympiad has led a revolution in science education. What began as a grassroots assembly of science teachers is now one of the premier science competitions in the nation, providing rigorous, standards-based challenges to nearly 7,000 teams in 50 states. Each year, a portion of the events are rotated to reflect the ever-changing nature of genetics, earth science, chemistry, anatomy, physics, geology, mechanical engineering and technology.

More than 4,500 of Ohio’s brightest middle and high school students are gearing up for the 2017 Ohio Science Olympiad regional tournament season, the first of which is Saturday, Feb. 25, at Case Western Reserve University.

Ohio Science Olympiad is the state’s premier competition that allows students in grades 5-12 to demonstrate their skills in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) areas. The season consists of eight regional tournaments, leading up to the state tournament, hosted by The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, on April 1, 2017.

“Ohio Science Olympiad is a unique opportunity for students statewide to utilize what they may be learning in the classroom through a fun, competitive experience,” said Angela Davis, Ohio Science Olympiad state director. “We hope this hands-on experience fosters the next generation of STEM leaders.”

The regional and state tournaments are set up like track-and-field meets. Teams compete in a series of 23 STEM-related events that add up to an overall score. This year, record-high 320 teams registered to compete throughout the next five weeks, in hopes of being one of the 40 teams to advance to the state tournament.

The Ohio Science Olympiad program is managed by Ohio State’s Office of Distance Education and eLearning (ODEE).
