On Friday, May 12, 2017, at 2:15 p.m. Grandview Heights Schools will officially launch the Grandview Heights Column Project at the corner of West First Avenue and Oxley Road on the lawn of Stevenson Elementary School. This one-of-kind project is a public art initiative that aims to bring together the Grandview Heights Schools with the wider community through art installations.
Stevenson Elementary has a long tradition of holding an All Arts Day each spring. The entire school is engaged with creative artists, musicians, dancers, and ceramicists for a full day. Parent volunteers Amy Greenberg and Henrietta Cartwright are extending this concept by initiating an artist in residence program throughout the school year. The purpose of the project is to bring together artists and students to create interactive and surprising art projects to engage and impact the greater community. The columns will act as a platform for this cross-curriculum educational piece.
Column Project partners include the Grandview Heights Schools, the City of Grandview Heights and its Fire and Police Departments, the Grandview Heights/Marble Cliff Education Foundation, the Ohio Arts Council, and Green (Floral Design Studio).
The "unofficial" launch occurred on Monday, May 1, 2017, when a “mysterious” art installation appeared in the column space compliments of an elite crew of graffiti artists. The point of the “mystery” was to provoke people into thinking about the line between art and vandalism (as well as publicity for the official launch May 12, 2017).
